My name is Henry Yoon, and I study architecture as my major at Carnegie Mellon University. I’ve always contemplated what the general direction is for living my life doing what I enjoy most, which is helping people. I believe that architecture is strictly a field of study where the fullest potential is brought out by studying cross disciplinary fields of study. In order to achieve my ambitions, I have taken an interest to both public policy studies and the blockchain and cryptocurrency realm. With these three nodes of study, I believe that I can breakthrough the current system of architecture and bring it to a new light using the blockchain as a decentralized system of development that can facilitate the typology to new heights.
I have always had a connection to South Korea as my heritage that I’ve always wanted to study, and my ambition of helping others through architecture, primarily through sustainability and affordable housing. At first, I was planning on utilizing radically sustainable materials and resources to build sub urban housing that connects the gap between the countryside and the urban cities of South Korea. Then I switched to focusing on addressing the potential of Korean unification. I felt that addressing this issue is significant because it is a current event that has drastically raised its possibility over the recent years. The site of this idea is right on the DMZ, or the demarcation line, which separates North and South Korea.
The North Korean has been living in a constrained lifestyle for the majority of history, and I felt that it’s time for them to live a truly free life through the lifestyle of the post-modern world. I intend on addressing the role of architecture in facilitating that assimilation, in order to minimize the possibility of the North Korean to be taken advantage of in this post modern society as an advocate for their basic human rights.
I have developed a proposal for my own cryptocurrency called UnityCoin, which will provide a solution for both the different currencies used in North and South Korea, while addressing the stark wealth gap between the North and South Korean. It will also provide a platform for outside countries and companies to invest in the initiative, and provide a realistic and decentralized way for the reunification costs to be paid for.
